Jackknife crashes: braking, articulation and the collision sequence
Published · Last updated
Short answer
A jackknife describes a tractor and trailer folding toward each other. The investigation must determine what happened before that movement and how other vehicles became involved.
Reconstruct the sequence before the final position
Preserve roadway video, skid marks, electronic braking information, weather observations and vehicle positions. Identify which movements were witnessed and which are inferred.
A trailer folding after impact may require a different analysis from articulation that began beforehand. Do not label the final resting angle as the cause.
Review the truck and cargo together
Maintenance, tire condition, brake records and cargo distribution can help test competing explanations. Qualified independent reconstruction should disclose inputs and assumptions.
